A World Away

This 3-part news series and half hour documentary aired on CBS WCCO-TV in May '93. Television anchor Colleen Needles and photojournalist Gary Feblowitz made the journey as a two-person crew a world away to the Asmat Tribe in Indonesia.

We were greeted by the former (hopefully!) headhunters of the Asmat Tribe. They picked us up and carried us into the village. That is me on the left and Donatus, the chief on the right.
Location: Irian Jaya, Indonesia. We traveled to the Indonesian portion of New Guinea. Landing in Jayapura we took a cargo plane to Wamena and then a small plane across the mountains into the village of Komor.
Subject: The Asmat are a tribe of former head hunters residing in Irian Jaya. This is the region, as you may know, where Rockefeller's son disappeared in the 60's. It was suspected that he fell prey to these headhunters.

We traveled to the region as guests of the Crosier missionaries. The Crosiers, based in part in Minnesota, are living with and are helping the Asmat tribe. When first told of this assignment I was skeptical as I new little of missionaries work and what they were trying to accomplish. As I came to understand, these missionaries are, in a way, working to undo some of the damage done to the culture of the Asmat by earlier missionaries. They are encouraging a return to original traditions, dance and dress with the exception of headhunting. For some, it is difficult as cannibalism was a right of passage for teen males. We traveled to Asmat to observe their version of the celebration of Easter.

Awards: This project won 3 Emmys for best series, documentary and photography. We sent one of the statues to the Asmat along with a copy of the story and a video projector. The Crosiers showed it to the tribes using a generator and the villages almost went to war over which one got to keep the statue.
